How it works
1
Set a base currency for the book
Chosen when the book is created and changeable afterwards in that book’s
settings. Each book has its own, so a client book can sit in dollars while
your personal one sits in rands.
2
Record entries in whatever currency they happened in
The currency is a field on the entry, like the amount. It is what the money
actually was, and it does not change.
3
Read the book in the base currency
Totals, charts and panels show converted figures, with the original amount
and its currency shown alongside so you never lose sight of what was
really paid.
What conversion does and does not touch
Your stored amounts never change. An entry is kept in the currency you recorded it in, at the figure you recorded. Conversion happens as the page is drawn, so today’s rates change what a chart looks like and never what your records say. Rates are refreshed once a day and read from that day’s cached set, so every panel on a screen agrees with every other one. Two people looking at the same book on the same day see the same numbers. The original is always in view. A converted figure is shown with the amount and currency it came from beside it. A book that quietly restated a 40 euro invoice as a rand figure alone would be hiding the only number your client would recognise.Basic and Premium
On Basic your entries are shown in the currencies you entered them in, without
conversion. Nothing is lost and nothing is blocked. What Basic does not do is
add them together into one figure for you.
The currency exposure widget is part of the Premium widget library. It
breaks your volume down by the currency each entry was recorded in, before
any conversion, which is the panel to look at when you want to know how
exposed you actually are.
