# Notification preferences

> What myClerkBook sends, which channel it uses, and why marketing email is a separate consent.

Notification controls live on your
[profile page](https://myclerkbook.com/app/settings/profile), in the **Alerts**
and **Email from us** sections.

## Channels

A channel is *how* a message reaches you.

<CardGroup cols={3}>
  <Card title="Email" icon="envelope">
    Available on every plan, and the channel alerts are delivered over.
  </Card>

  <Card title="SMS" icon="comment-dots">
    Premium. Your choice is recorded against your account.
  </Card>

  <Card title="WhatsApp" icon="whatsapp">
    Premium. Your choice is recorded against your account.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Warning>
  **Switching SMS or WhatsApp on records a preference, not a delivery.** Email
  is the channel alerts are delivered over, and the controls say as much where
  they sit. A switch that appears to work and silently never delivers is the
  version of this failure you would only discover at the moment you needed the
  alert.
</Warning>

## Classes and channels are two separate things

A **class** is *what kind* of message it is. A **channel** is how it reaches
you. Keeping them apart is the whole design: you should be able to take a
weekly summary by email and an emergency balance alert by WhatsApp without one
choice deciding the other.

## Marketing email is a separate consent

**Product news is never bundled with your alerts.** It is its own control,
labelled `Send me product updates`, and it is off unless you turn it on.

<Note>
  This is a legal record rather than a preference. POPIA section 69 requires
  consent for direct marketing to be given rather than assumed, so the control
  is never pre-ticked and is never folded into a general notifications switch.
  You can withdraw it at any time, and doing so affects nothing else about your
  account.
</Note>

## Which address each kind of mail comes from

| Address                         | Carries                              |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| `notifications@myclerkbook.com` | Alerts and summaries about your book |
| `accounts@myclerkbook.com`      | Sign-in email and billing email      |
| `hello@myclerkbook.com`         | Product news and other marketing     |

Every one of them sets a reply address of
[help@myclerkbook.com](mailto:help@myclerkbook.com), so replying reaches a
person.

<Warning>
  **One-click unsubscribe applies to marketing mail only.** Turning off product
  updates stops marketing email. It does not stop email about your account,
  such as a password reset or a receipt, because those are not marketing. An
  unsubscribe control on a trial-expiry alert would invite you to switch off the
  notifications the product exists to deliver.
