# Payment methods

> What you can pay with, where card details are held, and how to change them.

Payments are processed by **Polar**, the merchant of record for myClerkBook.

## Where your card details live

They live with Polar, and nowhere else. myClerkBook never receives, transmits
or stores a card number. Card details are entered into Polar's own payment
form inside the checkout window, and what reaches myClerkBook is the outcome of
the payment, not the instrument.

<Note>
  This is a deliberate architectural boundary rather than a limitation. Keeping
  card data entirely out of myClerkBook is what keeps it out of scope for card
  handling, which is the strongest guarantee available: we cannot lose what we
  never hold.
</Note>

## What you can pay with

Polar accepts major debit and credit cards. The exact set available to you
depends on your country and is shown in the payment form at checkout, so the
form is the authority, not this page.

## Changing your card

Adding or changing a saved card is done through Polar's own portal, reached
from any receipt Polar sends you. That hand-off exists for the same reason as
everything above: the page that takes a card number has to be Polar's.

<Warning>
  **An expiring card is worth acting on before it expires.** A renewal that
  fails because the card on file has lapsed will show on your billing page as
  an overdue payment. Updating the card through Polar's portal resolves it.
</Warning>

## Currency

Plans are priced in **US dollars**. Your bank converts at its own rate on the
day, and may add its own foreign-transaction fee. Neither the rate nor the fee
is set by myClerkBook or by Polar.

<Note>
  The currency your plan is priced in has nothing to do with the currency your
  books are kept in. A book kept in ZAR is unaffected by the plan being billed
  in USD.
